In 1974 Lorrie accompanied her husband on a six month sabattical to the Hawaiian island of Maui. During that time she replied to a help wanted ad in the Honolulu Advertiser
Re: Correspondent Wanted in Honolulu Advertiser
Dear Sir/Mme:
I am responding to your advertisement even though I am not quite sure of what is required of a “Travel-Trade Correspondent.” It sounds interesting and I might be qualified.
I have an A.B. and an M.A. from the University of California in Berkeley; also a certificate from the University of Lisbon, Portugal. I have studied a wide variety of subjects including anthropology, Chinese culture, political theory and the politics of Japan and Southeast Asia. I received my M.A. in Political Science and wrote on the rise of nationalism in Burma. In Portugal I studied Portuguese history and culture.
I have also studied many languages, among them: Russian, Chinese, German, Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese. I speak and write the last three fluently.
I consider myself a writer motivated by a profound interest in learning about and understanding man and society. I have published articles in Portuguese newspapers (in Portuguese) and also in a French magazine. One might call some of these articles travel impressions. I am presently working on a book about the thought of the American historian Henry Adams. I just finished a little article about where I’m staying on Maui and am prepared to send it on demand.
I have traveled extensively…beginning at the age of eight weeks. I have lived in the Philippines, Guam and Hawaii when a child. I have also lived in Spain, Portugal, and for a short time in Argentina. I have traveled in Europe, Central and South America and the Caribbean and the U.S.
I am married to a professor of Philosophy at the University of California who is also a writer…(published by the Oxford Press), but who hasn’t the slightest interest in travel.
I kept travel scrapbooks of the South Seas when I was a little girl and I will never lose that youthful enthusiam about the world. I enjoy learning and communicating. Good luck with your search!
Sincerely,
Lorrie was not offered the job
